Maroon 5 'Daylight' Track Review

MAROON 5
"Daylight" (3:46)
Producers: Adam Levine, MdL, Max Martin
Writers: A. Levine, M. Martin, M. Levy, S. Martin
Publishers: various
A&M/Octone/Interscope

Following the No. 1 run of "One More Night" on the Billboard Hot 100, Adam Levine and company are back with "Daylight," a midtempo ballad that sounds a lot like Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are." The Maroon 5 songbook has struck this chord before, on "Payphone" (minus the awkward Wiz Khalifa rap) and "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" (only with a more tepid chorus). On "Daylight," Levine sings about a last night with a lover, kind of like "One More Night" minus the guilt: "When the daylight comes I'll have to go/But tonight I need to hold you so close." The track drags a bit before reaching a crowning bridge, which provides some much needed momentum for Levine's emoting in the final chorus. Maroon 5 has certainly sounded spunkier and sexier before, so will pop fans want another sad song about saying goodbye? Fortunately, the answer is almost always "yes."

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Crown Hot 100, Justin Timberlake Soars to Top 5

The rappers reign on their first try with "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz, while Timberlake's "Suit & Tie" vaults 80 places to No. 4

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis continue their out-of-the-box success story, as "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz, tops the Billboard Hot 100 with a 2-1 rise in its 16th week. Justin Timberlake, meanwhile, vaults 84-4 following the first full week of airplay and sales for his comeback track "Suit & Tie."

After the pair's independently-released album "The Heist" blasted onto the Billboard 200 at No. 2 the week of Oct. 27, "Thrift" thrives with the Hot 100's top Digital Gainer award for a second consecutive week. The atypical rap ode to bargain-hunting tops the Digital Songs chart for a second frame with 341,000 downloads sold (up 22%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It remains at No. 1 on Streaming Songs ( which launched last week) with 1.68 million streams (up 16%), according to Nielsen BDS. It leads On-Demand Songs for a third week with 1.54 million on-demand streams (up 16%), rewriting the record for the most weekly on-demand streams dating to the inception of the list last March. (The survey includes data from subscription services Spotify, Rdio, Muve Music, Slacker, Rhapsody and Xbox Music.) "Thrift" passes the previous record-holder, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," which registered 1.41 million on-demand streams the week of May 5, 2012.

Airplay continues to build for "Thrift," which bounds 22-14 on Radio Songs with 58 million all-format audience impressions (up 32%), according to BDS. The track lifts 9-6 on Rhythmic, 17-16 on Alternative Songs and 23-18 on Pop Songs.

"Thrift," which tops R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a second week and Rap Songs for a third, marks the first debut Hot 100 No. 1 for a rap act since Wiz Khalifa sent "Black & Yellow" to the top the week of Feb. 19, 2011. The pair is also the first duo to dominate the Hot 100 with its first entry on the list since (cue the wedding DJ ...) Los Del Rio, whose pop culture smash "Macarena" ruled for 14 weeks in 1996.

With the coronation of "Thrift," the Warner Bros. label celebrates its first Hot 100 No. 1 since Jason Derulo's "Whatcha Say," (also a debut entry) led the Nov. 14, 2009, chart.

"Thrift" dethrones Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven" (1-2) after six weeks atop the Hot 100. Still, "Heaven" logs a fifth week at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart (146 million, down less than 1%). "Heaven" holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (1.26 million) and dips 4 -7 on Digital Songs (135,000, down 16%).

Macklemore & Lewis win the race to the top of the Hot 100 by a fairly comfortable margin over "Heaven," as approximately 9,000 overall chart points separate the titles (after "Heaven" topped "Thrift" by about 3,000 points last week). "Thrift" gains by 22% in points, while "Locked" loses 6% of its sum.

The Lumineers' "Ho Hey" stays at its No. 3 peak to-date on the Hot 100, while leading the Rock Songs chart for a 10th week. It pushes 3-2 on Radio Songs (117 million, up 3%), bullets again at No. 4 on Streaming Songs (1.25 million, up 5%) and holds at No. 5 on Digital Songs (156,000, up 1%).

Justin Timberlake scores the Hot 100's lone new top 10, as "Suit & Tie" rockets to No. 4 from its No. 84 debut last week. The lead single from his forthcoming album "The 20/20 Experience" storms onto Digital Songs at No. 2 with 315,000 first-week downloads sold. As previously reported, the total marks Timberlake's best sales week for a download, besting the 250,000-unit start of his seven-week Hot 100 No. 1 "SexyBack" in 2006. It's the heftiest start for a song by a male artist since Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" began with 521,000 the week of April 14, 2012. In its second week on Radio Songs (reflecting its first full week of airplay), "Suit" shoots 33-16 (54 million, up 50%), fueled by a record-setting start on Pop Songs, where it launches at No. 14 with more than 6,000 opening-week plays at the format.

"Suit," which vaults 9-1 on the R&B Songs chart (and 27-2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs), grants Timberlake his 12th Hot 100 top 10 and first since Ciara's "Love Sex Magic," on which he guested, reached No. 10 in April 2009. He hadn't inhabited the top tier as a lead artist since "Summer Love" rose to No. 6 in June 2007.

Timberlake now boasts twice as many Hot 100 top 10s on his own as he tallied as a member of 'N Sync; the boy band scored six top 10s between 1999 and 2002.

After climbing to No. 2 three weeks ago, Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." continues gaining, despite slipping 4-5 on the Hot 100. The newNo. 1 on Pop Songs claims the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a second straight week, charging 4-3 on Radio Songs with a 20% increase to 115 million. It descends 2-3 on Digital Songs (221,000, down 16%). The song is not available to subscription streaming services and thus, does not appear on the On-Demand Songs chart; its radio streams alone are not strong enough for it appear on Streaming Songs (which ranks both on-demand and non-interactive streams).
Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, will.i.am and Britney Spears' "Scream & Shout" bullets again at No. 6 (and leads the new Dance/Electronic Songs chart for a second week); EDM trio Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child," featuring John Martin, holds at No. 7; Rihanna's former three-week Hot 100 No.  1 "Diamonds" drops 5-8; Justin Bieber's No. 5-peaking "Beauty and a Beat," featuring Nicki Minaj, backtracks 8-9; and Phillip Phillips' "Home," which takes over atop Adult Contemporary, retreats 9-10.

Lady Gaga Has 'A Lot of Work Left' on 'ARTPOP,' Producer Says

Interested in Lady Gaga? Here's the latest!

Lady Gagaannounced her new album back in August, but producer Zedd says "ARTPOP" is still a work in progress.

"We've been working on it for over a year now," he told MTV News. "There's still a lot of work left, so we're definitely gonna work on this project for the next month."

Gaga's been busy with the North American edition of the Born This Way Ball tour and its accompanying Born Brave bus, which she's using to offer free mental health counseling to her fans on the road.

Lady Gaga Brings Born This Way Ball to Los Angeles: Live Review

"Hundreds of people came to the #BornBraveBus yesterday, so much great work done already. So proud of monsters for showing up, that is brave," she tweeted on Jan. 15. The tour, which just completed a two-night run in Los Angeles, will keep her on the road until March 20.

In September, Gaga promised the set would be a "multimedia experience," powered by iPad, phone and computer apps. Longtime collaborator RedOne is also set to be involved in the project, though the "Poker Face" producer hasn't joined the singer in the studio.

"We've been sending ideas back and forth," he previously told MTV News. "My intent is the same thing: make history. If we don't feel like this is part of history again, we're not going to do it."

XOXOXOXO.

Taylor Swift's Boyfriend Timeline: 10 Relationships & Their Songs

TAYLOR SWIFT:

Country pop darling Taylor Swift has certainly become known for writing songs about the ghosts of
boyfriends past. Now fresh off of a breakup with One Direction's Harry Styles, it's time to play a
familiar game: Which song is about Taylor's ex? We plowed through some of Swift's biggest hits and
matched the lyrics to 10 of Swift's high-profile (reported) former relationships. It's all based on clues,
speculation and a few rumors, so there's no guarantee we got 'em all right. But here are our guesses
-- look and listen.

Joe Jonas
(July 2008-October 2008)

Before he broke up with her over a 27-second phone call, Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift seemed
to be going strong. Her original reactions to the break-up -- "Last Kiss" and "Forever and Always"
-- were a little more scathing, but her latest perspective on the Jonas Brother -- "Holy Ground" --
is a lot more positive. She seems to have gotten over Jonas and is looking back at all the things
she loved about dating her fellow pop star.

Lucas Till
(March 2009-April 2009)

Swift's "You Belong With Me" co-star Lucas Till won her heart on the set of the hit music video,
but their relationship was short-lived. There didn't seem to be much drama, which is perhaps
why Till seems to never have had a Swift song written about him. He later spoke out about their
brief try at dating, saying that it "didn't work out" because he "really just liked her as a friend."
 Ouch.

Taylor Lautner
(August 2009-December 2009)

On the Speak Now single "Back To December," Swift apologizes (when does she ever do that?)
to an ex for a rough night, a night that very well could have been the one when she dumped actor
Taylor Lautner. Why assume she's talking about the former teen wolf, who first caught Swift's eye
on the set of their "Valentine's Day" flick? Well, she referenced his "tan skin" and "sweet smile."
The guy's both of those for sure.

John Mayer
(December 2009-February 2010)

What likely began as a sweet 2010 summer connection ended on a sour note and, of course,
in song (or, more likely, several songs). At 19, Swift seemed to think that John should have
treated the delicate country flower with a little bit more care. Shrewdly entitling the cut after
Mr. Mayer's first name, she spewed out lines like, "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with?
The girl in the dress cried the whole way home. I should've known." Geez, that's heavy.

Cory Monteith
(April 2010-May 2010)

Swift explained to Yahoo that the "Speak Now" song "Mine" was about a guy, "that I just barely
knew put his arm around me by the water, and I saw the entire relationship flash before my
eyes." Neither Swift nor "Glee" star Cory Monteith ever confirmed that they were dating --
although both turned bright red when Ellen DeGeneres breached the subject -- but if not
, she has an imagination great enough to dream up a solid song about what could have been.

Jake Gyllenhaal
(October 2010-January 2011)

In an NPR interview, Swift explained that "The Last Time" is about an "experience I had with
someone who was kind of this unreliable guy. You never know when he's going to leave,
you never know when he's going to come back, but he always does come back." Between
acting in flicks that take him all over the world and the bevy of gorgeous options Jake
Gyllenhaal likely has, it's not too far of a stretch to think Swift is singing, "Put my name at the
top of your list," about him. Eventually, though, she obviously got her name crossed off all together.

Eddie Redmayne
(October 2011-January 2012)

"My Week With Marilyn" star Eddie Redmayne was rumored to be dating Swift for a few
months at the end of 2011, but up until this week, the 31-year-old actor is still denying
that the relationship ever happened. Whether or not they did have the reported three-month
fling, Redmayne (despite having a name very similar to Taylor's most recent album) doesn't
appear to have made enough of an impact to earn a song on the pop princess' latest release.

Zac Efron
(February 2012-March 2012)

Taylor and Zac Efron reportedly started dating for a few months while promoting their movie
"The Lorax" in the first part of 2011. Both deny the rumors, however, and it doesn't seem like
Efron was attached to any of the songs on "Red." The pair did write a song about their relationship,
denying the dating rumors through a parody of Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks" on
 Ellen DeGeneres' talk show.

Conor Kennedy
(July 2012-October 2012)

During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Taylor explained that her single "Begin Again" is about,
"When you've gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and
go on that first date, after a horrible breakup." Coincidentally, at that moment the then 22-year-old
was enamored with 18 year old Conor Kennedy. Seems like he was the reason she was singing
lyrics like, "I think it's strange that you think I'm funny 'cause he never did." Of course she had to
throw a shot at the prior dude. But whatever.

Harry Styles
(December 2012-January 2013)

Taylor's relationship with One Direction's Harry Styles didn't last long, and it always
seemed rocky, but it was scrutinized by the media from the day the pair stepped out
together in Central Park until this week, when rumors started flying about the end of
Haylor. Even before they were officially a couple -- but months after they had a rumored
fling in April 2012 -- Swift wrote "I Knew You Were Trouble" about the British boy bander.
Once they broke up, all she had to tweet was a lyric from the song, "...'til you put me down,"
for fans to know it was over.
